M. R. Unni

Peer Evaluator – India Region

M. R. Unni is a distinguished academician and administrator with over four decades of impactful contributions to higher education and institutional management. He served as the Registrar of Mahatma Gandhi University, Kerala, for 15 years, during which he spearheaded transformative initiatives that elevated the university's standing both nationally and internationally. Under his leadership, the university achieved the prestigious Chancellor’s Award for Best University in Kerala in 2015 and 2018 and secured an ‘A’ grade with a CGPA of 3.24 in the NAAC reaccreditation process. Additionally, his efforts helped the institution secure high rankings in NIRF and DST assessments, showcasing his expertise in strategic academic and administrative planning.

Beyond his tenure as Registrar, Mr. Unni played a pivotal role in establishing and directing multiple inter-university centers, including the Inter University Centre for Studies in Science of Music, the Inter University Centre for Biomedical Research and Super Speciality Hospital, and the Inter University Centre for Organic Farming and Sustainable Agriculture. These centers stand as a testament to his visionary approach, having attracted substantial funding and fostered innovation in their respective fields. His initiatives, such as organizing international seminars and implementing model literacy programs like 'Jaivam,' reflect his commitment to fostering knowledge dissemination and societal betterment.

A seasoned educator, Mr. Unni has 21 years of teaching experience as a Senior Grade Lecturer at D. B. College, Thalayolaparambu, Kerala. He also served as a dedicated NCC Officer for 16 years, nurturing leadership and discipline among students. His creative endeavors include producing and directing educational feature films like Samaksham and Trip, which address critical issues like organic farming and drug abuse, further highlighting his multifaceted contributions to education and social awareness.

Post-retirement, Mr. Unni served as the Corporate Manager of 15 government-aided colleges under the Nair Service Society, overseeing arts, science, engineering, and medical institutions. Currently, he dedicates his time to organic farming and serves as the General Secretary and CEO of the Mannam Institute for Research, Development, and Training (MIRDT), where he continues to champion research and training initiatives. With a master’s degree in English literature and extensive training in administrative and academic leadership, Mr. Unni remains an inspirational figure committed to advancing education, sustainability, and community welfare.
