Dr. A. Chandra Sekhar

Dr. A. Chandra Sekhar is a distinguished Professor in the Department of Biotechnology at Yogi Vemana University, Kadapa, Andhra Pradesh, India. With a Ph.D. in Plant Sciences from the University of Hyderabad, he has dedicated his career to advancing our understanding of molecular markers, mapping, and QTL identification, particularly in foxtail millet. His research focuses on improving crop yield, nutritional quality, and stress tolerance, including drought resistance and biofortification. Dr. Sekhar's expertise extends to algal biotechnology, where he explores the potential of local microalgal strains for industrial applications, including biodiesel and biofuel production.

Dr. Sekhar's academic journey includes significant international research collaborations, notably with Prof. Roberto Tuberosa at the University of Bologna and Prof. Arjula R. Reddy at the University of Hyderabad. His postdoctoral work under the Generation Challenge Programme involved developing molecular markers for drought tolerance in pearl millet. Dr. Sekhar has contributed to the scientific community through numerous publications, including books on comparative mapping of rice and sorghum and molecular genetics approaches to drought tolerance in rice.

In addition to his research, Dr. Sekhar has held several key administrative positions at Yogi Vemana University. He was the founder head of the Department of Biotechnology and has served as the Coordinator, Warden for the Men’s Hostel, Additional Controller of Exams, and Director of the Incubation, Innovation, and Entrepreneurship Cell. His leadership extends to various committees, including the Central Purchase Committee and the Research Program and Policy Development in the Research and Development Cell. He has also been an influential member of multiple Boards of Studies.

Dr. Sekhar's contributions to education and research have been recognized with prestigious awards, including the Best Teacher Award from the Government of Andhra Pradesh in 2023 and the Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishna Best Teacher Award in 2021. He is a life member and fellow of several professional societies, reflecting his commitment to the scientific community and his field's advancement. His exemplary work has made significant strides in biotechnology, benefitting both academia and agriculture.
